リンデロフはシリーズを原作コミックの「リミックス」と例えており、リブートではなく『ウォッチメン』の連続性の中で新たな物語を作成し、新たなキャラクターを導入したいと考え、原作から34年後の架空世界が舞台となる。シリーズではロバート・レッドフォードがアメリカ合衆国の大統領となっている2019年のオクラホマ州タルサでの人種的緊張を取り巻く事件（タルサ人種虐殺）に焦点が当てられており、第7機兵隊と呼ばれる白人至上主義団体と彼らと戦う覆面の警察たちが描かれる。シスターナイトという別名で活動するアンジェラ・エイバー刑事（キング）は友人であり上司のジャッド・クロフォード（ジョンソン）の殺人事件を捜査し、ヴィジランティズムをめぐる状況に関する多くの謎に出くわす。新たなキャラクターに加えて、ドクター・マンハッタン（英語版）、シルク・スペクター（英語版）、オジマンディアス（英語版）といった原作のキャラクターも登場する。
シリーズ初回は2019年10月20日に放送され、第1シーズンは全9話構成で同年12月15日に完結した。
