北野武監督が脚本・編集・主演も兼ねて映画への想いを凝縮した異色コメディ。ひとりの映画監督がお得意のギャング映画を封印、様々なジャンルの作品に挑むもののことごとく頓挫を繰り返していくさまを、巨匠へのオマージュや自虐的ギャグなどを織り交ぜ奇想天外に描く。共演に江守徹、岸本加世子、鈴木杏。 ギャング映画を得意とする映画監督キタノ・タケシ。彼はある時、“ギャング映画は二度と撮らない”と宣言してしまい、これまで撮らなかったタイプの映画に挑戦することに。そして、小津安二郎風人情劇、昭和30年代もの、ホラー、ラブ・ストーリー、時代劇、ＳＦなど、片っ端から色々なジャンルに挑むが、いずれも中断に追い込まれる始末。そこで監督は、困り果てた末、ふとした閃きで一本の映画に取り掛かる。それは、金のためなら何でもやるサギ師の母とその娘が、政財界の大物・東大泉の御子息らしき男に財産目当てで接近するというもの。しかし、その時、地球には危機が迫っていた…。

2004年にブロードウェイで初上演された戯曲を、作者S・ベルバー（映画「10日間で彼女の心をうばう方法」を監督）自身が監督して映画化。主人公役は、舞台版でトニー賞の演劇主演男優賞にノミネートされたフランク・ランジェラから、実力派スチュワートに交代。「X－MEN」シリーズのプロフェッサーX役やTV「新スタートレック」でピカード役を演じたスチュワートだが元々は英国演劇界の本格派。本作で高い表現力を見せた。共演は「スパイキッズ」シリーズのC・グジーノ。
ニューヨーク。若いころはバレエダンサーだったが振付師を経て、老いた今はひとり暮らしをしながらジュリアード音楽院でバレエを教えるトビー。シアトルの夫婦、マイクとリサから米国バレエ史について取材したいと頼まれ、彼らを自宅に招く。ところが夫婦は1960年代のバレエ関係者の私生活を知りたがり、ある女性の名を出す。その女性はマイクの亡くなった母親だがトビーの元恋人で、マイクはトビーが自分の父親だと疑い……。
