明治時代の松江。松野トキ（まつの・とき）は、怪談話が好きな、ちょっと変わった女の子です。松野家は上級士族の家系ですが、武士の時代が終わり、父が事業に乗り出すものの失敗。とても貧しい暮らしをすることになってしまいます。世の中が目まぐるしく変わっていく中で、トキは時代に取り残されてしまった人々に囲まれて育ち、この生きにくい世の中をうらめしく思って過ごします。 極貧の生活が続き、どうしようもなくなったトキのもとに、ある仕事の話が舞い込んできます。松江に新しくやってきた外国人英語教師の家の住み込み女中の仕事です。外国人が珍しい時代、世間からの偏見を受けることも覚悟の上で、トキは女中になることを決意します。その外国人教師はギリシャ出身のアイルランド人。小さい頃に両親から見放されて育ち、親戚をたらい回しにされたあげく、アメリカに追いやられ、居場所を探し続けて日本に流れ着いたのでした。 トキは、初めは言葉が通じない苦労や文化の違いにも悩まされます。ところが、お互いの境遇が似ている事に気が付き、だんだんと心が通じるようになっていきます。しかも、二人とも怪談話が好きだったのです！ へんてこな人々に囲まれ、へんてこな二人が夜な夜な怪談話を語り合う、へんてこな暮らしが始まります――。
